A newly-released trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4 features the return of Jack Black‘s eponymous panda Po, and introduction of his new foe, the sorceress Chameleon, voiced by Viola Davis, a tiny lizard who can shapeshift into any creature. Chameleon is after Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.
Since the release of Dreamworks Animation‘s 2008 Oscar-nominated Kung Fu Panda, the franchise has earned more than $1.8 billion at the global box-office. Its last theatrical release, Kung Fu Panda 3, opened in 2016. Universal will open this new installment on March 8.
In this adventure, Po also teams up with a thief Zhen, a fox voiced by Awkwafina; and meets Han, the leader of the Den of Thieves, voiced by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once). Returning voice cast members include Dustin Hoffman as Kung Fu master Shifu; James Hong as Po’s adoptive father, Mr. Ping; Bryan Cranston as Po’s birth father, Li; and Ian McShane as Tai Lung, Shifu’s former student and nemesis.
Mike Mitchell (Trolls, Shrek Forever After) joins the franchise as director.
