Still haven’t seen the blockbuster that is Barbie? After breaking out of movie land and into home theaters in September, Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking film won two Golden Globes trophies for the inaugural cinematic and box office achievement and best original song for Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?” (See the singer reveal more about the songwriting process in THR‘s Songwriter Roundtable.)

Barbie is streaming on Max (formerly HBO Max), including in American Sign Language featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi. Max hosted a special community screening to celebrate the release on Dec. 14, 2023, with Robbie in collaboration with Tony-winning nonprofit, Deaf West Theatre, and advocacy organization, RespectAbility.

Where to Watch Barbie Online

Barbie is streaming exclusively on Max ($9.99-$19.99 monthly) and is also available on digital to rent for $5.99 or to buy for $19.99 on Amazon’s Prime Video and Apple TV.

Max’s ad-supported tier ($9.99 monthly, $99.99 per year) and ad-free plan ($15.99 per month, $159.99 per year) include streaming on up to two devices and full HD video quality, and the latter also offers 30 downloads. The Ultimate Ad-Free package ($19.99 per month or $199.99 annually) includes streaming on up to four devices, 4K Ultra HD video streaming and Dolby Atmos audio when available and 100 downloads.

Cord-cutters who already have a preferred streaming service can add Max’s channel to existing subscriptions of DirecTV Stream (which is currently offering Max for free for a limited time), Hulu or Prime Video. Max add-ons are $9.99-$15.99 per month in addition to each platform’s base plans. Hulu starts at $7.99 per month, while Prime Video is $8.99 per month or free for Prime members.

Unfortunately, AT&T no longer offers Max for free with new Unlimited plans. Those with existing AT&T Unlimited plans with a “grandfathered” free Max package can still access content streaming as long as they do not make any changes to their AT&T plan.

Barbie: Cast, Synopsis, Award Nominations

The film follows Barbie and Ken (Ryan Gosling) as they step out of Barbie Land and into the real world. It also stars Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Dua Lipa, Ritu Arya, Michael Cera and Emerald Fennell as Mattel dolls in the flesh and America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt and Will Ferrell as humans, with Helen Mirren serving as narrator.

Barbie won Golden Globes Awards for cinematic and box office achievement and best motion picture original song for “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas. It was nominated for a total of nine Golden Globes awards in the best comedy or musical category, including for best feature, best actress (Robbie), best supporting actor (Gosling), best motion picture director (Gerwig), best motion picture screenplay (Gerwig, Noah Baumbach) and best motion picture original song (“Dance the Night” by Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, Dua Lipa, Caroline Ailin; “I’m Just Ken” by Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt).

Long before Barbie premiered in July 2023, it spawned countless fashion and beauty collaborations, and Airbnb brought back its Malibu DreamHouse (with a Kenergy makeover) to celebrate the movie.

The fashion world immediately embraced Barbiecore a year before the movie even landed in theaters, with designers including Valentino creating bold pink looks for its Fall/Winter 2022 Pink PP collection. During the Barbie press tour in Los Angeles, Sydney, Seoul, Mexico City and London, Gerwig and her stars sported their best beyond-Barbie Land looks on the pink carpet. On set, Robbie enacted a weekly “pink day” where she would collect fines (which were donated to charity) from those who failed to wear something in the film’s signature color.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav previously said in an Aug. 3, 2023 earnings call that the film will be put through the standard theatrical release window. “Take it through these windows of economics that have worked forever, and we think work extremely well, and then put it on Max,” he said. “When [Barbie] goes on Max, we think it will have a very good impact, and that will be in the fall.”
